The main building of the Izhevsk arms factory is the first multystoried industrial building in Russia. Its construction began in 1811.

At the beginning of the XIX century it became clear: Russia not to pass war with Napoleon. But the Russian army wasn't ready for it. The small arms weren't enough, soldiers were armed separately, quite often trophy or with very old guns. The country had only two arms plant in Tula and Sestroretsk (near St. Petersburg). To build a third factory planned  Emperor Paul I, but the plan failed, because the king was killed during Palace revolution. Alexander I continued father's work.  On the map of the Russia appeared the Izhevsk arms factory. For the city it was extraordinary luck. In those time the Izhevsk ironworks plant founded in 1760 by the count Shuvalov fell into decay. The mining engineer Andrey Deryabin received a task to construct new small-arms factory.
